Alwyn was a stalwart of Yorkshire County. He was introduced to the sport of Bowls in 1972 by a friend and joined Nafferton Bowling Club. It soon became apparent that he had an aptitude and passion for the game. He remained at Nafferton until joining Driffield Recreation in 2006.
In 1978 Alwyn played his first County game for the C team, some six years later he received his County badge. Alwyn went on to progress through the ranks to the A team where he skipped for many years.
He has held many different positions within his local leagues as well as holding most positions within the County.
Alwyn was County Captain in 1985 before being elected President, a position he held on more than one occasion 1991 and 2015 he then held the fort for several years until Alan Smith stepped in for a year before Alwyn took up the duties again until his passing.
Alwyn was granted Life Membership of the County in 2000 and he was also a Trustee. He was No.5 District Secretary 1980-2005 and also County Secretary for 3 years 2004-2006.
Alwyn was Men’s County Tour Secretary 1988-2015 with a break in 1991 which was his Presidential year. He was also YCBA year book/diary editor and continued in this role until the information became available digitally.
In 2000 Alwyn was the Yorkshire Region Advisor on bowling green maintenance and then in 2005 he became English Bowling Association’s Greens Advisor for Northern England, a role he held for several years. Between 2005 and 2008 Alwyn was an English Bowling Association Executive member representing Yorkshire.
In 1978 he qualified as a National Umpire he became County Coach in 1988.
Between 2005 and 2008 Alwyn was a member of the Yorkshire County Steering Committee with the sole aim of working towards unification of the Men and Women’s Associations.
At a local level Alwyn was instrumental in obtaining funding from the National Lottery. He was a member of Scarborough Open Bowls Tournament Committee from 1978 holding the position of chair since 2005.
In recognition of all of the aforementioned work Alwyn received the prestigious Bowls England Certificate of Merit, he is one of only six Yorkshire recipients of this award.
Looking at Alwyn’s ability on the green he has been successful at all levels from club, local namely the Driffield Festival and Scarborough Open Tournament through to County and National levels. At County Level he won no fewer than seven County titles. The only two that eluded him were the Triples and the Junior Singles. Nationally Alwyn was losing Quarter finalist in the Men’s Fours and the Tony Alcock Trophy.
Alwyn was a true gentleman, and the County will be forever grateful for the legacy that he has provided for us to follow.
