Club Support and Guidance

Bowls Yorkshire and Bowls England provide extensive support to help clubs become well-run, sustainable and forward-looking.

Running your club effectively

Affiliated clubs can access guidance covering:

  • Governance and leadership

  • Legal structures

  • Data protection

  • Committee roles and responsibilities

  • Safeguarding and disciplinary procedures

Support is available from County Officers if required.

Bowls Development Alliance

The Bowls Development Alliance is a partnership organisation with a core purpose to; ‘sustain, grow and develop the sport in partnership with the Bowls family’.   Created by the Sport’s National Governing Bodies to channel Sport England investment into the sport, the Bowls Development Alliance’s primary goal is to increase participation in bowls whilst ensuring the sport is inclusive and accessible for all.  It champions collaborative working across the sport and it works to develop NGB-affiliated clubs and their volunteers, safeguard participants and share best practice.

Club Health Checker

The Club Health Checker is a free online self-assessment tool designed specifically for bowls clubs.  It is available to affiliated clubs via the Bowls Development Alliance and helps you:

  • Identify strengths and weaknesses

  • Highlight areas for improvement

  • Direct future development priorities

This is an excellent starting point for any club reviewing its structure.

Week of Learning

Affiliated clubs can access free webinars through Bowls England and the Bowls Development Alliance.

Topics include:

  • Safeguarding

  • Inclusion

  • Coaching structures

  • Leadership & governance

  • Legal structures

  • Dementia Friends Awareness

These sessions are designed to strengthen clubs both on and off the green.

Buddle (Sport England)

Buddle provides free resources to help clubs develop and become more sustainable.

Resources include:

  • Club finance guidance

  • Marketing support

  • Volunteer management

  • Governance toolkits

  • Online learning modules

There are over 40 courses available, including online modules and virtual workshops.

Active Partnerships

County Active Partnerships work locally to increase participation in sport and physical activity.

They can support clubs looking to:

  • Engage new audiences

  • Apply for funding

  • Build local partnerships

  • Develop community outreach programmes
